Paint the Backyard is the product of The QUILTBAG Game Jam: a 48 hour jam focusing on self-expression, queer themes, and queer games. It is a simple art game where you are given a canvas and four colors of paint and told to “paint the backyard”.

*Note: if you have a webcam please turn it ON before playing the game. You can play the game without a webcam, but having it on will enhance your gameplay experience.
The game was designed and programmed by myself and Isaac Steele, a fellow student at USC. Music composed by Colin Windmuller, also of USC.
The game plays with the player’s expectations and allows them to paint “outside the box”. A “simple painting game” becomes a colorful experience where the user can change their surroundings at the click of a button. At the end the player is asked to reflect on how they mold their own environment.
The game was built in Unity and C#. As a designer and programmer, I was proud of my ability to discern the scope of the project and create a game in such a short amount of time. Of all my game jam products to date, this one was the most manageable in the time allowed. Although the scope of the game was short enough for a 48 hour jam, we were still able to get across a strong message and create a fun, short experience.
