Rocket Bears was a board game made for CTIN_488 (Game Design Workshop) at USC. I worked on the game with Jean Canellas, Pat Bayles, and Alan Wagner.
When we first started working on the game, we explored topics such as evolving characters, 2-on-2 gameplay centering on trust, capturing points, and colonization. We eventually settled on item collection with an emphasis on resource management – players could choose to power up their character, making the game easier to play (or allowing them to be more aggressive) or power up their rocket ship to get ahead in the game. We spent a lot of time tweaking variables like how far players could move, how big the board was, how many, when and how resources dropped, and the value of resources. When we finally got the numbers down and were satisfied with gameplay, we showed a robot-themed game to our professor, who proceeded to tell us that robots were overdone. We did a complete overhaul of the story and came up with Rocketbears: The Game!
